The Latest From The Heavenly States - "Top-Notch"

“Three albums into their career, the Heavenly States have finally gotten through their growing pains and created the record that the best parts of their uneven early work suggested they had in them. Producing themselves for the first time and finally nailing down a permanent bass player (Masanori Mark Christianson), singer/songwriter Ted Nesseth and friends have streamlined the three key elements of their sound—acoustic folk-rock, noisy punk, and catchy indie pop—into something far more coherent than before. [...]” – Stewart Mason, All Music Guide. Read the full review here.

Catch their show on Wednesday, May 21st with The Poison Control Center from Ames, Iowa, and locals The Birdwatchers.

Six Questions For ... The Moaners

Chapel Hill, NC’s the Moaners was recently interviewed by David Malitz of the Washington Post

Six Questions For … The Moaners

“If Sleater-Kinney and Mary Timony had a baby named Lightning Johnson. That’s how the Moaners are described on a flier for tonight’s show at the Black Cat and it was such a good and funny description that I’m it to use right here. The North Carolina duo – Melissa Swingle on vocals and guitar, Laura King on drums – is certainly informed by the post-riot grrl indie-rock sounds of S-K and Timony’s sorely overlooked ‘90s band, Helium. But the Moaners are a blues band as much as an indie band, with Swingle’s slide guitar and Southern drawl giving the songs a distinctive Delta feel.[...]”

Read the full interview here and catch Yep Roc records’ all-girl indie-rock & blues duo tear it up on Tuesday, July 22nd. Ticket are on sale now!

Night Of The Living Shred wins "Best Club Night"

Night Of The Living Shred wins their third Westword Award in a row!

“Best Club Night” – Night Of The Living Shred

“One of the fliers for Night of the Living Shred shows a picture of two naked chicks with skateboards. But while you’ll probably see some skateboard videos Thursday nights at Bender’s Tavern, naked chicks not so much. Still, the young rocker boys and girls do sometimes let their hair down in more ways than one. It’s hard not to, what with guys like DJs Wesley Wayne and Parris on the turntables throwing down everything from ‘80s metal to old-school hip-hop and a whole lot more. For the past two years, these guys have been packing Bender’s dance floor and whipping the kids into a frenzy, in the process creating one of the city’s best nights to hook up. And if that ain’t enough, Wayne, Parris and promoter Charlie Morrison have also brought such renowned platter pirates as DJs Swamp, Qbert, Troublemaker, Goldenchyld, Platurn, Tittsworth and Klever to town.”

Best Of Denver 2008 , Westword
